Best Hat for Frigid Cold

What is the best form of protection for head, face, neck if caught in the frigid cold?

TA,
I've been wearing a pair of thin neoprene glove for kayaking in the winter. They are fairly warm yet thin enough for use when digit manipulation is required. Similar to a leather shooting glove, not as durable but MUCH warmer. Northwest River Supplies has a lot of wet/cold weather gear that you may want to check out.

Balaclava's work well, especially if they have a layer of windstopper. Some of the technological advances in outdoor gear are almost unbelievable. I have a modern version of the old aircorp fleece lined earflap hat that I swear by for cold weather. My wife still laughs at it sometimes, but once you put it on and close the straps under your chin you will not care what anyone thinks. Mine came from eastern mountain sports, but they no longer offer it. One reason I liked it was because it didn't have some manufacturers name plastered all over the side. I think columbia, north face, etc have them. Brain freeze sucks!

The tanker balaclava i`ve posted has a layer of nomex covering your whole chest and back plus a layer of Goretex inside to make it waterproof. It`s ugly as hell but nothing better for severe weather.

Almost any hat, provided you wear it in California.

But why nomex?? It seems a wind and water resistant nylon shell would be lighter and dryer.

Wool lined coyote fur, face and ears on top full pelt hanging down your shoulders and back. Mine is too warm for most outdoor activities, but good for real cold ice fishing.

The nomex is very thin and light,it`s for tankers so they keep their mugs in case of the tank being on fire.

That`s why the ugly Goretex-lined nomex tanker US Army balaclava is the best, look for it on ebay for about 12$ shipped sometimes.

7.99$ shipped,grab it bro!I`m getting a second one!

The Russian "Ushanka" hat is BY FAR the finest cold-weather hat yet devised. You can fold up the earflaps and neck flap for warmer weather, or put them down for sub-trillion-below-zero excellence!

Continuation of my post above. Here's a synthetic version of the Ushanka, on a synthetic Russian woman. I own both synthetic as well as real fur (Mink, I think, but I'm not sure... I can't read the Russian writing on the tag) versions, and I can tell you that the real fur is THE way to go. I've walked around in 20 Deg. below zero weather with the fur version, and actually had SWEAT on my scalp and ears when taking it off!

occamsrazor 12-22-2009 12:54 AM

Re: Best Hat for Frigid Cold

Ushanka takes the cake for the absolute worst cold but one needs something like a thin balaclava underneath to cover the face and circulate the warm air you exhale inside of it.Everyone has an ushanka in Russia but balaclavas are not in fashion there, maybe due to the criminal connotations of it.I have a very thin Katadin snowmobile nylon balaclava, black and very intimidating-looking for medium cold weather, weighs nothing and circulates your oun warm breath.I`m a huge fan of balaclavas in cold weather, they do a great job plus they make you look intimidating so less chances of being mugged because you look like a you are up to no good yourself.

a short history of balaclava, ironically originated in Russia.

Where did you get the pattern for the balaclava/hood?

Here is a link to a store bought version:

It probably does, but that isn't saying much. Have you ever worn one while driving an ATV or snowmobile?
When you're working outside you don't want to take off the balaclava and put on a helmet every time you go drag another log or fetch a gas can for the sawmill etc..

Still hoping for that blow test.

I found this bit from the wikipedia article to be amusing:

Quote:

British Police in Kent confiscated the War on Terror board game partly due to the inclusion of a balaclava. Police said it "could be used to conceal someone's identity or could be used in the course of a criminal act".[7]
It is also for concealment purposes, may be used during the course of illegal activities by criminals or terrorists, and occupationally used by SWAT and Special Forces personnel.

Have to second that

These mountain man rigs are functionally very simular to the russian wear, and with the pelt dropped give the "ruff effect" of an eskimo parka around your face[kinda preheating the air in your face area] Wolf and coyote fur are the best for this use.

If you can find them yet, former Soviet Army hats are ungodly warm, the type with the flaps.

Coyote, trapper style....around 300 bucks, frigging block heater. I've had it for close to 20 years, but the fur just started to crack last year. Need to bring it to a repair place.
